ASUS PRIME X399-A Motherboard Review

ASUS PRIME X399-A Motherboard Review

Earlier this month we reviewed our first ThreadRipper-supporting X399 motherboard, and as luck would have it was one of the most feature packed models on the market: the ASRock Fatal1ty X399 Professional Gaming. The downside of features is that they always carry a price, and in the case of this ASRock motherboard that price was an eye-watering $660 up here in Canada. When you combine that with the $700 or $1050 or $1250 for a ThreadRipper processor, the total starts to add up quickly. With this in mind, we went on the lookout for a budget-friendly X399 motherboard, and failing at that task, we settled the next best thing.

At $350 USD / $450 CAD, the ASUS PRIME X399-A is one of the least expensive motherboards with an AMD TR4 socket. We will shy away from using the word affordable though, since $450 is still a heck of a lot of money for any non-sentient piece of computer hardware. Clearly, AMD is selling the X399 chipset for a very healthy profit, but we digress...

What do you get for your money? Well for starters, this model has an 11-phase CPU VRM made from the best available components, four steel-reinforced PCI-E 3.0 x16 slots that support both 3-way CrossFire and 3-way SLI, one PCI-E 2.0 x4 slot, and one PCI-E 2.0 x1 slot. Those who need a ton of I/O connectivity might be disappointed since this model only has two full-size M.2 x4 slots, six SATA 6Gb/s ports, and one U.2 NVME port. Both the number of M.2 slots and SATA ports are below average for an X399 motherboard. However, the USB connectivity is off-the-charts. There are two high speed USB 3.1 Gen2 ports on the rear I/O panel, one Type-A and one Type-C, as well an internal USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C header that can provide up two ports to the front of the case. On the rear I/O there are an impressive eight USB 3.0 ports, which are further bolstered by two internal USB 3.0 headers. When you combine all of that with the two USB 2.0 headers there are a grand total of twenty USB ports at your disposal.

When it comes to networking the PRIME X399-A isn't going to impress anyone, since despite its lofty pricetag it only has a single gigabit LAN port. No redundant ports, no onboard Wi-Fi, or certainly no ten gigabit connectivity. This seems rather stingy to us, but since the other X399 motherboards in this price range also only have one LAN port clearly everyone is needing to penny pinching in order to reach this price point.

Much to our surprise this cost cutting extended to the audio section as well. While the Crystal Sound 3 onboard audio solution is based on the familiar Realtek ALC1220 ten-channel codec and linked to an array of Nichicon audio-grade capacitors, there is no separate Texas Instruments op-amp for the front panel headphone output. Instead, ASUS are utilizing the amplifier that is built into the codec itself. While that is a perfectly workable solution, it is a bizarre move given that dedicated op-amps have become standard equipment on most motherboards above $150. It will be interesting to see what the audio results look like.

Thankfully there are little extras, we appreciate the Q-Code debug LED, the BIOS Flashback button that allows you to flash the UEFI without powering on the system, and the onboard thermal sensor header. The onboard power button is hugely handy for those with test benches, but the lack of a reset or even clear CMOS button is disappointing since there is ample room for them next to the power button. There are seven total fan headers, all of which are four-pin PWM/DC capable and are fully controllable from within the UEFI and the Fan Xpert 4 utility. Two of those seven fan headers are dedicated towards AIO and water pumps.

While this introduction is perhaps not the most auspicious beginning to a motherboard review, at least some of our concerns and criticisms can be overshadowed if everything works as well as it should, or even better surpasses our expectations. So if you're interested in AMD's new HEDT platform, and need to find the most economical way to own it, this motherboard might just be what you're looking for.

OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T get Face Unlock with latest OxygenOS updates

OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T get Face Unlock with latest OxygenOS updates

OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T have finally received the much-anticipated Face Unlock feature that had been teased since late December. The advanced feature comes with the latest OxygenOS Open Beta builds that also add support for Airtel VoLTE in India. Alongside the new releases for the 2016 models, OnePlus has released new Open Beta versions for the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T. All the new OxygenOS Open Beta versions include Launcher version 2.3.
OnePlus has developed OxygenOS Open Beta 30 for the OnePlus 3 and OxygenOS Open Beta 21 for the OnePlus 3T. Both the new versions include the Face Unlock feature that was initially designed for the OnePlus 5T and later released for OnePlus 5 via a recent Open Beta build. As its name suggests, the Face Unlock feature allows users to unlock the smartphone by using their faces. This comes as an addition to the original fingerprint unlocking method that uses a built-in sensor to match fingerprint patterns of users. Notably, OnePlus’ Face Unlock feature is designed to offer an experience similar to Apple’s Face ID that has so far been offered on the iPhone X. However, the latter utilises the proprietary TrueDepth camera hardware, while the former is just a software tweak and recognises faces using the front-facing camera sensor of the supported devices.
In addition to the Face Unlock feature, OxygenOS Open Beta 30 and Open Beta 21 bring Airtel VoLTE support to OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. Airtel’s 4G VoLTE services are so far limited in India but are designed to offer high-quality voice call experience. Further, the new OxygenOS Open Beta versions come preloaded with OnePlus Switch app to enable backup and restore. The latest Open Beta builds also include various bug fixes and optimisations.
For the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T, OnePlus has released OxygenOS Open Beta 4 and Open Beta 2, respectively. Both the new Open Beta versions have optimisations for logic managing high-power consumption applications as well as a more intelligent background application management solution. The new builds also include improved power consumption measurements and various bug fixes and optimisations. Additionally, there are new preloaded apps, including OnePlus Switch, File Manager, and Dialer. The fresh Open Beta builds also have a new clipboard feature that lets users edit the text copied and then choose to search, translate, or share.
The new OxygenOS Open Beta versions for the OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T, OnePlus 5, and OnePlus 5T come with Launcher version 2.3. The updated Launcher has new drawer categories that emerge when the search icon is tapped. Also, the Launcher includes auto-folder tagging, notification dot optimisations, and improved launcher usage tips. There is additionally a dynamic Clock app icon that changes the hour, minute, and second hands in a real time, similar to what has available on Apple’s iOS and Xiaomi’s MIUI.
Despite some of the new features and advancements, the new OxygenOS Open Beta versions are still meant for testing purposes as they include some known issues as well as various hidden bugs. As per OnePlus’ official records, the newest Open Beta builds have some conflicts with third-party camera apps. The company also explicitly warns users that the new builds are not as stable as the official OTAs generally are. Therefore, you should proceed only if you are ready to accept the potential risks just for sake of testing the new features.
You can install the OxygenOS Open Beta versions on your OnePlus devices by flashing the respective builds into the smartphone. It is recommended to back up your data as all the stored data will be lost during the flashing process. OnePlus has provided its flashing guides to help you easily install the new version. Moreover, the new ROM versions are also available for download from the OnePlus site.

Huawei takes India first approach to take on the likes of Xiaomi, Oppo.

Huawei takes India first approach to take on the likes of Xiaomi, Oppo.

Huawei Honor 7X smartphones is now being manufactured in India, under the 'Make in India' initiative.

At the launch of the Honor 9 Lite, Huawei revealed its aim to become the world’s third-largest smartphone brand in the next five years. And for that, Huawei said that India will play a big role. The company has decided to take the India-first approach to bring new smartphones ahead of any other global market, which it said will help achieve 10 percent market share by March 2018.
In fact, at the Honor event yesterday, Huawei’s Vice President, Sales, P Sanjeev said that the approach has been adopted right from the launch of Honor 9 Lite, which has been launched in India a month early than other global markets. “The focus on the Indian market has increased significantly…we do biweekly meetings with top bosses in China to update them about the growth and support required,” Sanjeev told the ET. “Seeing the potential, we expect India to become our largest market outside China soon.”
Reportedly, moving in the direction of its goal, the company is also ramping up its investments in research and development (R&D) and manufacturing. It has around 300 engineers working exclusively to support the Indian market.
Companies like XiaomiOppo and Vivo have been really taking over the smartphone industry in India, and that dominance can be attributed to dual-channel strategy – online and offline. Huawei and Honor in India have mostly been exclusive to the online marketspace in India.
However, Sanjeev also revealed at the event yesterday that it is opening its first ever offline experience center, and that will be set up in India. He also announced that under the Make in India initiative, the company’s Honor 7x is now being manufactured in India.
Huawei introduced its sub-brand Honor in India three years ago, and started manufacturing locally in partnership with Flex India in September 2016. The company has a presence in over 30,000 retail shops in India and deals with over 400 distributors.

5 Security Features Present in the Android 8.0 Oreo

5 Security Features Present in the Android 8.0 Oreo

5 Security Features Present in the Android 8.0 Oreo Platform.

Google officially rolled out the next flavor of Android under a cookie name Oreo. This update brings a range of features focusing on the speed and efficiency resulting in improved performance.
Also, the Android 8.0 Oreo update tackles much-needed background activity that drains your battery and your data plan. Apart from some amazing features, the Android Oreo also has little-known security enhancements that are equally important as other features. In this article, we have compiled a list of security reasons that are present in the Android 8.0 Oreo.
In general, the Android allows apps to create popups on top of other Android apps. This resulted in some features called Picture-in-Picture (PIP) mode. However, some hackers have started exploiting this feature asking for ransoms. In this iteration of Android, there is a persistent notification whenever there’s a System Alert Overlay.
Sideloading apps in now safe
Previously sideloading apps without any verification can prove to be a huge risk. But with Android Oreo, it requires you to toggle this setting on a per-app basis. For example, you can allow manual installation of APKs from the Chrome, but block installation of APKs downloaded from any other sources.
Android verified Boot 2.0
Basically, what you call as Android Verified Boot comes built-in with Android since 4.4 KitKat. A Clever Android malware with root permissions has the ability to hide making them undetectable to security apps. This prevents the device from booting up. To avoid this, Android Oreo comes with Android verified Boot 2.0, which has Rollback Protection.
This feature prevents the device from booting, in case if it is downgraded or to a more vulnerable version. It can be done by storing the operating system version inside a special hardware.

Protection on public Wi-Fi
Connecting to a public Wi-Fi is always risky, as one would assume it comes with security issues. In an attempt to solve this problem, Android Oreo comes with WiFi Assistant feature that helps users to connect to a high-quality Wi-Fi network and secure it with a VPN back to Google. But there is a catch here. As of now, this feature works only in Project Fi and Nexus/Pixel devices. Hope Google rolls out this update in the near future to all Android 8.0 Oreo devices.
Physical Security Keys
Google has rolled out two-factor authentication a few months back for security reasons. Sometimes this can be frustrating as we have to enter unique codes as the second form of authentication.
In order to replace this, Android Oreo brings support for physical security keys that you can be connected to your phone using Bluetooth or NFC. As the developers are building this feature in the apps, it might take some time before getting into the real-time usage.

Airtel 4G Hotspot Can Now Be Purchased from Amazon India for Rs.999 Only

Airtel 4G Hotspot Can Now Be Purchased from Amazon India for Rs.999 Only

Airtel 4G Hotspot the rival to Reliance JioFi can now be officially purchased from Amazon India for Rs 999. So far, Airtel has been selling the 4G Hotspot device on its online store, but from now customers will be able to purchase the device from e-commerce portal Amazon. Airtel announced the announced the availability of Airtel 4G Hotspot device on Amazon exactly a month ago alongside the official price cut.

In December 2017, Airtel permanently slashed the price of the Airtel 4G Hotspot to Rs 999, in order to put it against the Reliance JioFi hotspot device. To recall, Reliance Jio slashed the price of Jio-Fi M2S router in September 2017, making it an affordable purchase at Rs 999. However, the permanent price cut from Airtel has become a worry for Reliance Jio now.
Airtel 4G Hotspot Specifications and Features
The Airtel 4G Hotspot is manufactured by Chinese vendor Huawei, and it allows customers to create a Wi-Fi hotspot zone wherever they go. It allows users to connect up to 10 devices at the same time, which doesn’t match JioFi as it can connect up to 31 devices at the same time. The Airtel 4G Hotspot has a 1500mAh battery inside, which is rated to deliver more than six hours of battery life.

This Airtel 4G Hotspot device works only with Airtel 4G SIM SIM card. Another best part of the Airtel 4G Hotspot is that it will switch to the 3G network automatically if there’s no 4G network availability in a particular area.
Airtel 4G Hotspot Tariff Plans
The tariff plans for Airtel 4G Hotspot start at Rs 499 per month and goes all the way up to Rs 12,000 for a yearly pack. Airtel is also providing exciting offers such as 1GB data per day currently with some of its plans. For example, the Rs 499 plan for the hotspot device gives 1GB data per day for an entire month, on top of the standard 5GB data offered by the base pack.
Besides Amazon, Airtel 4G Hotspot can also be purchased on all the leading Airtel retail stores and also on Airtel Online Store.

Review: Intel Core i7 8700K Processor

Review: Intel Core i7 8700K Processor

Review of Intel Core i7 8700K Processor

It is time to check out the new six-core proc from Intel, the Core i7 8700K will be put through our benchmark paces. This is Coffee Lake, Intel's new mainstream processor that you will need to seat on a Z370 chipset based motherboard. The processor does a good job and leaves an impression, as well as it being tweak able to atleast 5.0 GHz on all six cores.
First, let me start by stating that Intel has not been a part of this review whatsoever. As I have mentioned before, Intel is ignoring the bigger part of EU press. And as such once again we have not received a shred of information let alone a single processor for review. That means we used a processor supplied from an industry contact. This is a proper Core i7 8700K (ES) processor. But it would be SO GOOD, if anyone from Intel who reads this would take notice and step up, to solve this dramatic situation in EU for the Nordic region specific. Currently, nobody from Intel is even responding to our hails.
In this article we'll have a look at a new Core i7 8700K processor from Intel, the new six-core part is based on Coffee Lake(S) architecture and is the direct answer and effect from what AMD has been pursuing aggressively in the desktop processor channel. With this first 'mainstream' step from Intel, we'll get 6-core processors. These will need to be paired with a new motherboard chipset and thus motherboard, the Z370 based ranges. As you probably have figured out, Intel still does not have a mainstream priced 8-core processor available. Coffee Lake will not address that. Later this year you will see a Z390 chipset and motherboard range, it is suggested that here you'll see 8-core mainstream priced processors, based on Ice Lake architecture. This, however, remains speculation, as Ice Lake is based on a newer and smaller 10nm fabrication process. With the introduction of Ryzen and more recently the announcement of Threadripper processors the processor market and channel have been turned up-side-down, and Intel is slowly waking up from its S3 deep-sleep state finally realizing that they cannot keep serving just quad-core processors in mainstream, as they have been doing for subsequent years now. AMD gave Intel a serious awakening call and as such, they needed to step up, significantly. Intel’s primary processor business has been releasing and refreshing quad-core processors for many years combined with high-margin spicy priced E type processor release every now and then.
You can't really blame Intel either as there simply was no competition - hence they had no rush and have been relaxed all the way for years now. Intel did anticipate Zen (or Ryzen), but the AMD consumer aimed Threadripper 16-core and Naples server segment 32-core made Intel step up its game a notch as they shifted into a higher gear ever since Ryzen was released. Over the summer Skylake-X Processors have been announced with limited releases and availability for the highest core count process. Skylake-X however is available in good quantities for the 10-cores and 12-core parts, but these start at 999 Euros for the 10-core version. There is an Intel Core i7-7800X Hexa-Core available at the sub-400 Euro ranger though, but it needs to be tied towards an X299 motherboard, but these start at 350 euros. Ergo, AMD is outflanking Intel in any and every product segment price wise. This now changes with the Coffee Lake generation of processors that have up-to six-cores alongside more affordable Z370 motherboards.

Free Internet Quality Microsoft Project through Doordarshan Oasis

Free Internet Quality Microsoft Project through Doordarshan Oasis

It is estimated that Internet-based software services and market value in India will increase in many trillion dollars. In this great market, companies such as Facebook and Google want to increase internet use in India, with a view to increasing their revenue, and a number of attempts to provide free internet communication. This means that people / companies use many Internet services if internet connection is available to everyone.
Currently, the Microsoft company has requested the government to grant a free, low-cost (Rs 140 a month-4mbps speed) internet communication service.
A part of the "White Space" 200-300 MHz has not been used for many years in the turmoil used by the Doordarshan television service. This White Space is a vacuum that can be used between a TV channel and subsequent television channels for allocated channels.

You can simulate this as a big WiFi part. A giant WiFi Zone will be about a kilometer long radius. Once it is enough to install the structure. You can give free internet service to all those 10 kilometers of the radius. While installing it in every corner of the country, the whole of India will be connected to the Internet. This great program has been reported that the Prime Minister of India is likely to be in partnership with Modi in the Digital India project. This service is already used in Ghana, South Africa and the United Kingdom (UK), and this is the first time that this service is made in a large area like India. It seems to be in force in 2018.The state seems to be entering the "mother web" via cable tv.

Jio Plans With 1GB Data Per Day to Get Price Cuts on Tuesday, New 1.5GB Data Per Day Plans to Be Launched..

Jio Plans With 1GB Data Per Day to Get Price Cuts on Tuesday, New 1.5GB Data Per Day Plans to Be Launched..

Jio will cut the prices of its plans with 1GB data per day by up to Rs. 60 as part of a new Happy New Year 2018 offer. This will bring down the base price of Jio plans with 1GB data per day to Rs. 149, down from the current Rs. 149. Interestingly, this move will nullify the tariff revision implemented by the operator in October. Apart from this price cut, Jio will also launch a host of plans with 1.5GB data per day as part of the exercise. These changes will come into effect on Tuesday, January 9 and the first of many such announcements to come.

Starting Tuesday, the Rs. 199, Rs. 399, Rs. 459 and Rs. 499 Jio plans will cost Rs. 149, Rs. 349, Rs. 399 and Rs. 449, respectively. Details of the plans, such as the data allocation, calling, and SMS benefits as well as access to free apps, will remain the same as before.
Current price

New price Validity Total data (1GB/day)
Rs. 199 Rs. 149 28 days 28GB
Rs. 399 Rs. 349 70 days 70GB
Rs. 459 Rs. 399 84 days 84GB
Rs. 499 Rs. 449 91 days 91GB
The new 1.5GB data per day plans the operator is bringing in are priced at Rs. 198, Rs. 398, Rs. 448, and Rs. 498. These are the price points of the 1GB data per day plan, meaning consumers are essentially getting 50 percent more data at roughly the same price.
Price Validity Total data (1GB/day)
Rs. 198 28 days 42GB
Rs. 398 70 days 105GB
Rs. 448 84 days 126GB
Rs. 498 91 days 136GB

It is not yet clear when the price cuts will end, but more clarity can be expected on Tuesday. The move will come into effect just days before the ongoing Jio promotion with cashback and vouchers of up to Rs. 3,300 ends. The operator has 160 million users across the country, and has been dictating market terms since its launch. In the past few weeks, operators have started offering more data without raising prices on certain popular recharge packs, so this move can be seen as a means to keep Jio users from moving to other networks.

However, the smartphone is quite likely to go on sale in India following the initial availability in the Chinese market. China’s Suning has started taking pre-orders for the Nokia 6 (2018), and its sale will begin starting January 10. The 32GB Nokia 6 (2018) variant will be available with a price tag of CNY 1,499 (roughly Rs. 14,600), whereas its 64GB variant will come at CNY 1,699 (approximately Rs. 16,600). Both the variants will come in Black and Silver colour options.

Nokia 6 (2018) specifications, features:

Unlike the original Nokia 6 model that was launched back in January last year with a front-facing fingerprint scanner, the Nokia 6 (2018) features a fingerprint scanner on the back. The new smartphone has also dropped the capacitive keys that were available on alongside the frontal fingerprint scanner on the previous Nokia handset. The Finnish manufacturer has apparently chosen on-screen navigation to make the interface of the new Nokia 6 closer to stock Android UI. The decision is conspicuous as it has maintained a 16:9 display aspect ratio, and not used a 18:9 aspect ratio that was the primary cause of other manufacturers ditching front fingerprint scanners and hardware capacitive buttons. Further, the Nokia 6 (2018) has a metal unibody build that is made of 6000 series aluminium.
The dual-SIM (Nano) Nokia 6 (2018) runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box. The handset is also expected to receive an update to Android 8.0 Oreo sometime in the future. But the company hasn’t so far provided any official details on the latest Android update. On the display part, the Nokia 6 (2018) features a 5.5-inch IPS display with a full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio. The smartphone is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 SoC, which is clocked at 2.2GHz, coupled with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM. Also, the internal storage of the new Nokia 6 is upgradable via microSD card slot (up to 128GB) in a hybrid dual-SIM configuration.
HMD Global has provided a 16-megapixel rear camera sensor on the Nokia 6 (2018) with dual-tone LED flash and PDAF lens that has f/2.0 aperture. Similarly, an 8-megapixel camera is available on the front with an f/2.0, 84-degree wide-angle lens. The smartphone also supports the company’s proprietary Dual-Sight technology that allows you to capture simultaneous shots from the rear and front camera sensors to create a Bothie. In terms of connectivity, the smartphone has FM radio, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth v5, GPS/ A-GPS, USB Type-C, and 3.5mm audio jack.
Besides, the Nokia 6 (2018) packs a 3000mAh battery that supports fast charging technology. It measures 148.8×75.8×8.6mm and weighs 172 grams.
